BMC Unveils New Affordable Housing Scheme for Mumbai Citizens

Thousands of homes to be offered under BMC’s latest initiative to make housing more accessible for middle and lower-income groups.

In a significant move toward addressing Mumbai’s housing shortage, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a new affordable housing scheme aimed at providing homes to economically weaker sections (EWS), lower-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG). The scheme is part of BMC’s long-term plan to make housing within city limits more attainable for common citizens.

Under the new plan, BMC will offer residential flats across prime and developing localities such as Bhandup, Mulund, Kurla, and Dahisar. The application process will be fully digital, with online registration and lottery-based allotment to ensure transparency. The civic body has partnered with MHADA and local developers to bring quality homes equipped with basic infrastructure and amenities at subsidized prices.

“Our goal is to ensure that every Mumbaikar has a chance to own a home in the city they work and live in,” said a senior BMC housing official. “Through this initiative, we are bridging the affordability gap while maintaining construction quality and transparency.”

The launch comes at a time when housing affordability remains a major challenge in Mumbai. With property rates continuing to rise, schemes like these play a crucial role in supporting urban inclusion and easing pressure on the rental market. Experts believe this step will help balance the city’s real estate ecosystem and provide relief to first-time homebuyers.

For many Mumbai residents, this scheme represents more than just a housing opportunity—it’s a chance to build stability and security for their families. Applications are set to open later this month on the official BMC portal, bringing new hope to thousands of aspiring homeowners.
