Supreme Court Orders Faster Completion of Kolkata Metro Work

The long-pending Kolkata Metro corridor project once again came into focus after the Supreme Court strongly questioned the delay in completing the remaining construction work. The court stated that infrastructure projects meant for public benefit should not face continuous obstacles and emphasized that development work must move forward without unnecessary interruptions.

Metro Corridor is one of the most vital transport projects of Kolkata as it links the highly populated residential areas of South Kolkata to Sector V, the business district of the city. Thousands of office goers, students, and regular commuters use this transport route every day. Due to congestion on the roadways in the city, particularly during office hours, the metro connection is anticipated to save a lot of time for the daily commuters.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court said the project is ultimately meant to benefit the public. In addition to that, the court ordered it to keep track of the ongoing metro construction work. The problem pertains to the incompleted 366 meters of Kolkata Metro overhead track at Chingrighata crossing in Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in East Kolkata. The only part that remains unconstructed in the whole metro corridor project is this section.

Prior to this, the Calcutta High Court had given permission to put temporary restrictions on traffic flow for the completion of the pending overhead metro work and set a deadline of February 15, 2026, for completing the project.

It is being believed by officials that this incomplete 366 meters elevated metro corridor is highly significant as it would link the existing sections and make the metro corridor functional from end to end. When construction of the metro project comes to an end, people traveling from South Kolkata to Sector V would have a hassle-free journey.

This metro project will not only ease the pressure of traffic congestion on major roads but will also make traveling easy for people through this metro project. Commuters going to offices or schools or even travelers will have ample time saved during rush hour timing due to this metro project.

It is also believed that this metro project will add to the growth of the real estate market in the neighborhood of the metro project. Metro stations located in sectors like Sector V, EM Bypass, Chingrighata, and South Kolkata are expected to see a rise in demand for residential, rental apartments, and commercial properties.
